Gleaners and Royal United Mortgage LLC Team Up To Fight Hunger

December 22, 2016 by Marcy Grinslade

On December 2, 2016, 66 Royal United Mortgage LLC team members volunteered at Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana.  Their mission is:

To end hunger by engaging individuals and communities to provide food for people in need.

With 1 in 6 people in central and southeast Indiana struggling with hunger and food insecurity, that mission takes on more importance every day.

The 66 volunteers donated their time at the Gleaners Distribution Center. The large group was divided into three smaller groups. One group of 10 volunteers was in charge of sorting meat in the freezers. Another group of 10 worked on unloading bread. The remaining 46 volunteers sorted boxes of food, toiletries and other nonfood items.

Each time a group of volunteers goes out to Gleaners, there is a mindset of setting a new record. Partially because of the competitive spirit but more importantly because the volunteers know that the harder they work and the more they are able to accomplish the more people they are helping.

Although the overall record was not broken, the team of volunteers did set a record based on the number of people that were there. When all was said and done, 6,510 pounds of nonfood items were sorted. The amount of food sorted was impressive. In total the team ended the day sorting 15,490 pounds of food. Gleaners estimates that will provide close to 13,000 meals for people in central and southwest Indiana. The team is already looking forward to helping out again in 2017!
